Ohira | Uchigumori | Karasu
This natural stone originates from the Ohira mine in Kyoto. Uchigumori is widely respected for its ability to reveal strong contrast between hagane (core steel) and jigane (cladding). The term Karasu refers to the dark speckled pattern that occasionally appears in this layer – a rare and valued characteristic.
This is a genuine rarity. The stone is well-preserved, with a clean and consistent structure and large, practical dimensions. It is medium-hard, releases slurry quickly, and does not require a nagura. It produces a smooth, mid-tone kasumi with excellent coverage. While suitable for both edge refinement and kasumi polishing, its primary use is polishing.
The Tanaka family, led by Tsuneaki Tanaka, holds the mineral rights to the Nakayama mine and is well known for both natural and synthetic stones. This particular stone has been in their family since the 1970s. Through our growing collaboration, it is now available to a dedicated user. Tanaka expressed gratitude that the stone will be used and appreciated by a true enthusiast.
