Uchigumori stone from the Mizukihara quarry.
Mizukihara (水木原) is the name of a quarry in western Kyoto, located on Mount Ōhira. The quarry is especially known as one of the few sources of genuine Uchigumori stones, traditionally used in Japanese polishing.
The stone has an irregular shape, with a flat surface ready for use. You can also break the stone apart to make finger stones, or grind it into Uchigumori powder. It is also possible to build your own holder if you want the stone to sit horizontally like a traditional whetstone.
Length: 90 mm
Weight: 241 grams
Uchigumori is a softer, finer type of Suita stone, perfect for polishing high-carbon steel.
Final polishing & pattern enhancement: Uchigumori is intended as a finishing whetstone – ideal for highlighting the hamon, kasumi, and other decorative structures in the blade.
Finger stones or powder: By breaking off smaller pieces you can create finger stones – perfect for detailed work and precise polishing control. You can also grind the stone into powder (uchiko-like use) for an even finer finish.
Subtle kasumi (misty) finish: Uchigumori creates a soft, bright kasumi effect, especially when used with a thick slurry, producing a professional and aesthetically refined surface.
